Consultant neurologist, diagnosing and treating disorders of the brain, spinal cord and nerves — stroke, epilepsy, headache, movement disorders and nerve damage. Neurology is a diagnostic specialty first: the appointment is largely history and examination, and the treatment plan follows from what that establishes rather than from a scan alone.
What a neurologist treats
Disorders of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles — stroke and its prevention, epilepsy, migraine and other headache disorders, Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, and nerve damage from diabetes and other causes.
When you would be referred
Seizures, recurring headache that has changed in pattern, numbness or weakness, tremor, memory change, or dizziness that has not resolved. Sudden weakness on one side, sudden difficulty speaking, or the worst headache of your life are stroke or haemorrhage until proven otherwise and need emergency care rather than an appointment.
At the first consultation
Neurology is a diagnostic specialty before it is a treating one. The appointment is largely history and clinical examination, and the diagnosis usually comes from those rather than from a scan — which is why the questions can feel unusually detailed. Tests such as MRI, EEG or nerve conduction studies are ordered to confirm or exclude, not to search.
What to bring, and what to ask
A timeline of your symptoms, ideally written down, any previous scans, and a full medication list including anything stopped recently. Worth asking: what is the working diagnosis, what else could it be, what would change the diagnosis, and what should prompt you to seek help urgently.
