Artificial Disc Replacement

A worn disc is replaced with a mobile implant that preserves movement at that level instead of fusing it. It is offered in the neck more often than in the lower back.

How it differs from fusion

Preserving movement is thought to reduce stress on the discs above and below, which is what drives the adjacent-level problems seen years after a fusion. It needs a healthy facet joint and reasonable disc height to work, so not everyone is a candidate.

What the operation involves

One and a half to three hours, usually approached from the front of the neck, with two to three days in hospital.

Recovery and what to expect

Often quicker than fusion because nothing has to knit. A sore throat and difficulty swallowing for a week or two are common after a neck approach. Most patients return to desk work within two to four weeks.
