Hair Transplant

Hair follicles are moved from the back and sides of the scalp, where hair is genetically resistant to thinning, to areas that have receded.

The two techniques

Follicular unit extraction removes follicles individually and leaves small dot scars, so short haircuts remain possible. Strip harvesting takes a band of scalp and leaves a linear scar but can yield more grafts in one session. Neither is better in general; they suit different hair types and different goals.

What determines the cost and the result

The graft count. Agree it in advance and in writing — a quoted price for an unspecified number of grafts tells you nothing. Density, hair calibre and the design of the hairline matter as much as the number.

Recovery and what to expect

A day-long procedure under local anaesthetic. Scabbing for a week or two, then — expectedly — the transplanted hairs shed at two to four weeks. Regrowth begins around three to four months and the final result is judged at twelve to eighteen months. Anyone showing you a result at three months is showing you the wrong photograph.
