Brain Tumour Surgery

Surgical removal of a brain tumour, planned from your imaging and usually guided by intraoperative navigation. The goal is to remove as much as can be removed safely — a balance between clearance and function.

What the operation involves

Three to eight hours depending on the site and size. Where the tumour sits near areas controlling speech or movement, the surgeon may use intraoperative monitoring, or occasionally an awake craniotomy so your function can be tested during surgery. Modern technique usually means only a small area of hair is shaved.

Recovery and what to expect

One to two days in intensive care and five to ten days in hospital. Tiredness for several weeks is normal. Steroids are commonly used to control swelling and are tapered gradually.

The result you are waiting for

The tissue goes to the laboratory, and the histology determines everything that follows — whether further treatment is needed and what the outlook is. Results typically take several days to two weeks. We hold your case open until they arrive and make sure they reach your doctor at home.
